Kanjurmarg dump yard deadline extended

Earlier, another bench of the HC had directed BMC to identify alternate dumping sites to dump waste of the city.

Mumbai: The Bombay high court has extended the time limit of Kanjurmarg dumping ground and allowed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to dump solid waste there till March 24.

The court also directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to send some officers at dumping sites to check if the BMC is following all the norms of MPCB and other environmental clearances or not.

On top of that, they directed the state to file an affidavit after inspection done by the officers and kept the matter on March 20 for further hearing.

A division bench of Justice Abhay Oak and Justice P.N. Deshmukh was hearing a PIL filed by residents of Kanjurmarg about the violation of pollution norms at the dumping ground.

The petitioner also alleged that scientific method is not being used while disposing of the waste, which is affecting environment. Mumbai sends its waste to three dumping grounds located at Deonar, Mulund and Kanjurmarg currently waste is possessed only at Kanjurmarg.

The court on Wednesday, said that it is not possible for them to restrict corporation from disposing off waste in the Kanjurmarg dumping ground because eleven thousand metric ton waste generates every day in the city and it needs to be disposed off daily.

Earlier, another bench of the HC had directed BMC to identify alternate dumping sites to dump waste of the city.
