Mumbai: The residents of 104 “most dangerous and dilapidated” buildings in the city face evacuation as the Brihanmumbai Munic-ipal Corporation (BMC) has expedited the process of vacating these structures before the monsoon. To avoid loss of life in the event of calamity, the civic body has decided to vacate the buildings before the end of May.

As part of its monsoon-preparedness, the BMC has identified 104 buildings in the ‘C1’ category, which includes the most dangerous and dilapidated structures. Ghatkopar (N ward) tops the list with 28 buildings, followed by Malad (P north ward) with 18, and Andheri west (K west ward) with 9.

According to BMC data, there were 664 ‘C1’ category buildings in the city. Of the 664, 99 have been demolished while 101 have been vacated completely. The action against 464 such buildings has been stalled owing to a stay order issued by the courts, whereas 36 buildings have been referred to the technical advisory committee for its recommendations.

Of the remaining 248 buildings; water and electricity connections of 144 buildings have been severed, while action against the 104 buildings will be completed by end-May.

A senior civic official said, “Despite all-round attempts, residents have refused to vacate the 104 buildings, which have been declared extremely dangerous. Looking at the probable threat to the lives of these residents, we have decided to vacate these buildings before the end of May.”

Plans are afoot to create awareness about the need for evacuation through posters and documentaries. Notwithstanding, if the residents are unwilling to vacate their homes, electricity and waterconnections of these buildings will be cut-off and if needed, police support will be taken to vacate the structures, the official said.
