Dropout rates in Mps far less than vernacular medium schools: report

According to Praja, dropout in semi-English schools is the same as the overall dropout rate of 8 per cent.

MUMBAI: The dropout rates in the civic body run Mumbai Public Schools (MPS) is far less than the vernacular medium schools, according to he Praja Foundation’s annual report of the year 2016-17.

According to the BMC officials, parents prefer these schools because firstly it is English medium, secondly, parents do not have to shift students after pre-primary, primary or secondary because students get complete education from kindergarten to class 10 under one roof.

Parents feel that the quality of education in these schools are much better as the teachers recruited in such schools are qualified or belong to renowned NGOs.

“I have personally met the teachers and they are exceptionally nice to the students as they have been trained professionally. Moreover it is a full fledged English medium so I decided to shift my daughter from Gujarati medium to MPS,” said Ratla Ghera, a parent.

According to Praja, dropout in semi-English schools is the same as the overall dropout rate of 8 per cent. While, as of MPS schools the dropout rate is only 2 per cent.

“There is a lot that can be done to improve the quality of the education system. There have been a few positive steps such as MPS system that the corporation can look to expand in its other schools as well,” the report said. It is further pictured that the enrolments of students in these schools have increased rapidly. Whereas there is a decrease in the dropout rate. In the year 2014-15, it was 1,147 while in the year 2016-17 was 857.
