Mumbai: A day after the brutal daylight murder in Ghatkopar, autopsy reports revealed that the victim was stabbed 35 times. The police meanwhile arrested the third accused in the case, and has learned two new names of assailants in the murder.

The third accused arrested in the case has been identified as Gopal Nadar (32) who was apprehended from Mumbai, by a team of Ghatkopar police. The officials said that he was one of the five assailiants who stabbed Sanjay Dubey alias Bablu (40) near Tahira Mosque Monday.

Officials said that all the accused were armed with swords and choppers, and stabbed Dubey simultaneously.

Earlier, the police had arrested Vijay Akhade (37) and Sanjay Patwa (29). The two accused on the run have been identified as Imran Shaikh and Santosh Mane, the police said.

“The autopsy report has revealed 35 stab wounds which led to heavy bleeding and consequently, death. We learned that Akhade and Dubey were rivals and the former feared getting killed and hence, hatched a plot to do away with Dubey,” said an officer of Ghatkopar police station.

In the past, there had been instances of attacks on Dubey’s brother over bagging of slum redevelopment projects.

The police is however questioning the accused further to ascertain the authenticity of the revelations and is on the lookout for the remaining two accused.

Dubey was hacked to death outside an eatery he regularly visited near Sarvodaya Hospital around 11.30 am on Monday. The attackers arrived in an auto-rickshaw and stabbed Dubey multiple times, then fleeing from the spot.

Dubey himself had at least four cases of assault and attempt to murder registered with police stations in the neighbourhood, the police said. The accused have been booked under IPC sections 302 (murder), 34 (act of common intention) with the police also adding 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) in the case.
