Mumbai: The Bombay high court has directed the urban development department to issue a circular to 27 municipal corporations of the state, asking them to implement all recommendations made by the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to reduce noise pollution in their respective areas. NEERI told the court that it wants to conduct further research and needs the help of institutions like the IIT. The court then asked NEERI to submit its requirements in writing.

A division bench of Justices A.S. Oka and M.S. Sonak was hearing a bunch of petitions seeking strict implementation of noise pollution rules and action against illegal pandals that mushroom during festivals. In June this year, NEERI had submitted its report to the court with recommendations on the implementation of noise pollution rules.

The court on Tuesday noted that on July 6, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) sent copies of the report to municipal commissioners across the state and sought a periodical compliance report on its implementation. “The Urban Development Department shall issue a circular to all municipal corporations to act upon the MPCB's letter,” the court directed on Tuesday.
