Clear pension funds of 1,500 teachers: BMC

The teachers have been waiting for their pension since the last five years.

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked their education department to clear the pension funds of around 1,500 aided school teachers within 30 days. These teachers have been waiting for their pension since the last five years.

The reason for the delay, according to the department is the unscrutinised document verification procedure and lack of manpower in the accounts and the finance department. According to government resolution (GR) by the central government, the claims and documents should be submitted to the corporation for pension procedure on the last working day of the teacher.

“There are several offices of the BMC where the teachers need to submit these documents, but there is a confusion as to what all has to be submitted. Moreover, the teachers are 60 plus, making it difficult for them to run from pillar to post,” said Aarti Pugaonkar, member, education committee.

The teachers suggest having a centralised process to avail pension as it will bring clarity and make the work easy. “Instead of us running around, why not the officers at the department help us with this? I am 62 years and I am not really in a situation to go to offices and get my work done,” said Megha Naidu (name changed), a teacher. Ms. Naidu has been trying to get her pension since last four years after her retirement.

Shubhada Gudekar, the chairperson of BMC education committee told the education department on Thursday to get the pension issue resolved in 30 days.
