This rise in voting in these areas augurs well for the BJP, as it contains large number of party supporters there.

Mumbai: The credit for the record breaking 55.53 per cent voting in Mumbai on Tuesday for BMC elections goes to the areas of Mulund, Borivali, Sion, and Colaba, which have recorded a surge of more than 15 to 20 per cent of voting. This rise in voting in these areas augurs well for the BJP, as it contains large number of party supporters there.

However, voting in Mulund and Borivali has significantly increased to 21.96 per cent and 18.92 per cent, respectively. In the 2012 BMC polls, Mulund had recorded 38.64 per cent and Borivali had recorded 42.58 per cent voting.

Sion, with 41.47 per cent voting last time, has recorded 16.53 per cent rise, whereas A ward (49.11 per cent), which always fares poorly in voting percentage, has shown a growth of 14.96 per cent. This is a significant rise considering that A ward – including Colaba, Fort, Churchgate, Cuffe Parade, Nariman Point – had recorded only 34.15 per cent voting in 2012 elections.

All these areas include a sizable population of Gujarati and Marwari voters, who are traditional BJP supporters. Party spokesman Bhalchandra Shirsat said, “Not only Gujarati and Marwari voters, people from all sections of the society have voted for the party and hence we are confident of a thumping win.”

BMC’s final data shows that 50,987,565 Mumbaikars voted for the BMC polls, making the over all percentage 55.53, the highest in last 25 years.

Despite rise in ward A voting, south Mumbai continues to lag behind. Ward C (Bhuleshwar, Marine Drive) 47.27 per cent, ward D (Malabar Hill, Girgaum) 47.27 per cent, ward B (Dongri, Nagpada) 49.11 per cent and ward E (Byculla, Mazgaon) 49.11 per cent have all recorded voting below 50 percent.
