BEST PRO Hanumant Gophane said that a departmental enquiry will be initiated against the bus driver and conductor.

Mumbai: Amreen Shaikh (22) was crushed to death between two buses near Kurla depot even as accused driver Sanjay Pawar reversed the bus, hitting the girl who was passing through the gap to reach the bus depot. Ms Shaikh was rushed to civic-run Bhabha Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

According to police sources, Ms Shaikh, a resident of Kurla, was on her way to her office – HDB Financial Services located in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). At 9.30 am, when she was passing through the gap between two buses to enter the Kurla bus depot, a bus number 2652 being driven by Mr Pawar hit a parked bus number 2139 while in reverse, crushing Ms Shaikh between the two buses.

A police official said that the driver was taking a reverse turn without the assistance of the bus conductor which led to the accident. A local from the spot said, “The bus depot is right outside the railway station, and it is always crowded and busy. Since it was a weekday, the streets were busy. This place always carries the risk of an accident.”

Lalasaheb Shetye, senior police inspector of Kurla police station, said, “We have booked the driver for rash driving and death due to negligence under sections 279 and 305 of the Indian Penal Code.”
