Government orders testing of Mantralaya water source
Mumbai: A day after close to 60 people fell ill due to contaminated water at Mantralaya, the state government has ordered testing of the water supplied through its pipelines.
The state chief secretary Ajoy Mehta issued the order on Saturday after holding a meeting with the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Public Health Department in Mantralaya.
Rajya Patrit Adhikari Mahasangh founder and chief advisor B.D. Kulthe said that around 50 to 60 people had fallen ill owing to the contaminated water.
They had been vomiting and experiencing stomachache. “We have demanded that the water be examined, and the government has accepted our demand,” said Mr Kulthe.
Taking serious cognisance of the Mantralaya staff falling ill, Mr Mehta directed testing of drinking water samples from water tanks, pipelines and the RO water purifier at Mantralaya.
The PWD department informed during the meeting that the water tanks had been recently cleaned.
A senior officer told The Asian Age that he had been suffering from dehydration, stomachache and vomiting owing to the drinking water at Mantralaya, which had been stinking since the last two to three days.
The Opposition, especially the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Dhananjay Munde, had raised the issue of the contaminated water in the Upper House on Friday.
Responding to the Opposition, the state government acknowledged that it had received complaints regarding the same.
