Students struggle for accommodation

According to MU officials, one hostel is ready while the other two are under construction.

MUMBAI: This paper has been writing about the accommodation crunch faced by Mumbai University students, especially the outstation ones, both from MU’s Fort and Kalina campus. The June 23rd edition of The Asian Age reported on the problems faced by new students due to a lack of hostel facilities. Even though the varsity has allocated ' 3 crore this year for the construction of a new girl’s hostel, the work is still going on.

According to MU officials, one hostel is ready while the other two are under construction.

Students have even complained about how the rooms of these hostels are cramped with more than two students being accommodated in a single room.

According to the students, renting accommodation outside the hostels is very expensive and many housing societies are hesitant about renting out houses to only boys or only girls.

“Also renting a flat in Mumbai is hard for students like us, who come from remote parts of the state. MU should clear things regarding hostel facilities before giving admissions to students,” Ranjana Trilok, an ex-student of MU, told this newspaper.
