Indrani Mukerjea to court: Want to donate my organs

After Indrani completed her request, the court asked fellow accused Peter Mukerjea if he too wanted to donate his organs.

Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea, who is accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora, informed the court on Thursday that post her death she wants her organs to be donated.

She also informed the court that she wants 75 per cent of her assets to be donated as well. Indrani said she wants 50 per cent of her assets to go to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and the rest 25 per cent to non-governmental organisations (NGO) working for women who have been abandoned by their families after their arrest.

Interestingly, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has claimed that the reason behind the murder was that Indrani was afraid Sheena would get maximum share of the property if she married her stepson, Rahul Mukerjea.

On Thursday, when court proceedings in Sheena’s murder case was over for the day and special judge H.S. Mahajan deferred the matter till Friday, Indrani raised her hand and said she had two requests to make. Following the judge’s permission, she said she has been behind bars for 15 months and has seen the suffering of fellow inmates. “I don’t need assets as I am leading a simple life and want to donate 75 per cent of my properties,” said Indrani.

She further said she wants to donate half of her properties to ISKCON and the rest of to any organisation that works for welfare of women and children. When the judge told her that she does not need the court’s permission on what she want to do with her property, she said she made the request before the court because she is in the court’s custody. Following this, the judge asked her to make a written application.

Indrani informed the court that her second request was that she wanted to donate her organs after she is dead. She said, “I do not know what the judgment is going to be. I may be sent to the gallows or to life imprisonment or I will be acquitted. But I want to donate my organs.”

After Indrani completed her request, the court asked fellow accused Peter Mukerjea if he too wanted to donate his organs. The ex-media baron said he did not intend to do so. On Tuesday, Indrani had told the court that she has translated 700 shlokas of Bhagavad Gita from Sanskrit to English and wanted these to be converted into a book. She had also said she wanted half of the earnings of her book to be donated to ISKCON and the rest to NGOs working for women who have been abandoned by their families after their arrest.
