Road near Bombay Hospital to be two-way

The civic body will widen the road by implementing the road line, which was drawn way back in 1967.

Mumbai: In a relief to patients and general public, the road near the Bombay Hospital, which is one-way, will soon become a two-lane road. The Brihanmumbai

Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to widen the road and this will facilitate the movement of vehicles as well as pedestrians.

The Bombay Hospital is located on two roads - Vitthaldas Thackersey Road and Bombay Hospital Lane. However, both the roads have one-way traffic, due to which patients and ambulances had to take a detour up to Churchgate railway station to reach the hospital.

According to civic officials, the width of the Bombay Hospital Lane, which is presently 12.30 metres, will be increased to 21.34 metres. Six shops coming in the way of widening have already been shifted. A well, which is alongside the lane and proving to be an obstacle in the road widening, will be covered with a slab.

“The widening work will be completed next month and a two-way traffic will be on the road,” said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner, A ward.

The civic body will widen the road by implementing the road line, which was drawn way back in 1967. Due to the road line, the 12.30 metres wide road (40 feet) has now been widened further up to 21.34 metres (70 feet).

After the two-way traffic starts, vehicles coming from Vasudeo Balwant Phadke Chowk (Metro Chowk) can take a right turn from the Mahatma Gandhi road and reach the hospital directly through the Bombay Hospital lane. This will save them a detour up to the Churchgate station, said a civic official.
