Mumbai: Two 20-year-old undertrials, who had been arrested on charges ranging from robbery, dacoity and to attempted murder, escaped from Kalyan’s Adharwadi jail by jumping over the prison walls with the help of a CCTV camera cable early on Sunday morning. The accused, Davind Murugesan Devendran and Manikandan Selvaraj Nadar — after telling the authorities that they were going to answer nature’s call — cut the cable around 4.30 am and proceeded to use it to scale a wall, raising questions about the prison’s security system and whether an insider had aided them.

Fortunately, however, a CCTV unit installed inside the prison captured the duo’s escape, and officials are analysing its footage to gather leads, a prison official said.

The escape came to light around 6.45 am when guards found the undertrials missing from their barracks.

The jail premises were immediately combed through to see if the two were hiding somewhere in the prison itself. The police then went through CCTV footage, after which it was confirmed that Devendran and Nadar had jumped over the wall. The police is likely to check if the two had any ‘inside help’.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Balasaheb Kadam, senior police inspector of Khadakpada police station, said, “We will have an internal inquiry to complete the probe.”

Devendran was arrested from Kalyan under Section 397 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to robbery, or dacoity, with an attempt to cause death or grievous hurt; while Nadar was arrested from Manpada in Palghar district under Section 307 of the IPC, which pertains to attempt to murder.
