Wife of ex-hockey player held for murder
Mumbai: Amita Chenanda, second wife of the former hockey player Apaiyya Chenanda (52), was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing him to death on Saturday afternoon in Malad.
After attacking Apaiyya, Amita had allegedly inflicted injuries on herself. Amita, who was receiving treated at a civic-run hospital in Kandivali, was arrested by Malad police on Wednesday afternoon after she was declared fit by the doctors. A police source said that she was arrested after Apaiyya’s family alleged that she often fought with him on petty issues.
The police source added that officials had already questioned the family members and neighbours when Amita was hospitalised and had gathered enough evidence against her.
After the doctors of Kandivali’s civic-run Shatabdi hospital declared her fit to be discharged, the police team of Malad immediately arrested her for allegedly murdering her husband.
During the interrogation, the neighbours revealed that Amita had approached them for help and claimed that her husband stabbed himself to death after his attempt to kill her failed.
However, after her story did not match up with the statements narrated by the family and other acquaintances of Apaiyya, the police came to a conclusion to arrest her.
Sudhir Mahadik, a senior police inspector at Malad police station, said, “We have arrested the accused woman and have booked her under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that pertains to murder. She will be presented in court.”
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon after the couple sat down for a few drinks when the kids were not at home, and soon an argument ensued between the two argument took a violent turn. Amita allegedly stabbed Apaiyya to death with a knife.
