Colleges reject FYJC applicants, say unit test over

A majority of junior colleges in the city have either completed their unit tests or will be conducting them in the coming week.

Mumbai: In a first, colleges in the city are allegedly rejecting applications of first year junior college (FYJC) students who are yet to secure admission. According to a source in the state school education department, many colleges are doing this because they have already completed unit tests and are preparing for semester exams. However, this will adversely affect students who have still not secured a seat in any college as this is the last round of admission.

A majority of junior colleges in the city have either completed their unit tests or will be conducting them in the coming week. Hence, colleges are of the view that if they give admission to any student at this point, it will be difficult for him/her to prepare for the unit tests. Sudhya Vyas, principal, K.J. Somaiya College, said, “We have our unit tests from October 3, and if we give admission now, it will be impossible for that student. In our case however, all seats in all streams are full but generally speaking, giving admission at this point is a no-no.”

Parag Ajgaonkar, principal, N.M. College, said, “We have got two to three applications under the MCVC stream (vocational course) but the management has decided not to give admission. We have already completed our unit tests and our term tests will start in the next 15 days. If we give admission, the student will be under severe pressure which we would not like.”

The source said, “While colleges are rejecting admissions, are they even giving a thought to the fact that this is the last admission round for the remaining students. If they miss out this time, they will be left without a single seat and with no offline admission this year, they will lose a whole year.” This year the academic year for FYJC students started on August 9.
