Mumbai: A huge plastic water tank burst after falling down in a labour camp located at Hiranandani Complex, Powai, on Saturday morning, injuring seven men, all construction labourers. Two of the injured, Motilal Sahani (31) and Khairal Aalam (35), have been admitted to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital and are in a critical condition.

According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management unit, the incident took place at the construction site between 8 and 9 am. The Sintex water tank, which was filled to its 16,000-litre capacity, was placed on a brick-cement structure that likely collapsed under the weight and pressure of the overflowing water.

Dr V. Thukur, superintendent of Rajawadi Hospital said, “Valeshwar Sahani (47), Inaul Haq (40), Jitendra Nishad (21), Rupchand Nishad (22), and Shabbir (27), were taken to the nearby Hiranandani Hospital. All five are stable.”

The police is inspecting the site and probing the incident, following which a case will be registered. Navinchandra Reddy, deputy commissioner of police, zone 10, said, “The Powai police has registered a case of negligence against the contractors and will act upon any further complaint in the incident. The matter is technical and we are trying to find out who was at fault.”
