Mumbai: A Mumbai-based lawyer has sent a complaint letter to the Bar Council of India (BCI) seeking disciplinary action against lawyers calling themselves ‘chowkidars’ (watchmen) on Twitter.

“An advocate is an officer of the court. He is expected to uphold the Constitution of India and the rule of law for the larger interest of justice. It is a noble profession. Anyone indulging in other profession loses his licence to practice law,” said advocate Ejaz Naqvi, who has sent the complaint to the BCI.

He further stated, “An advocate is not entitled to remove his title of advocate prefix anything like chowkidar or watchman. Therefore I decided to make a complaint.”

On March 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had added 'chowkidar' as a prefix to his Twitter handle which gained positive response.

This was a part of the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign, which was started to counter the ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ campaign started by the Opposition party.

Following this example, many followers of the Prime Minister took part in the campaign and added ‘chowkidar’ to their Twitter handle.
