Act against petitioners in Loya row'

Loya who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case was found dead on December 1, 2014.

Mumbai: A group of lawyers on Tuesday approached Bombay high court Acting Chief Justice V.K. Tahilramani seeking suo moto contempt action against those who filed petitions in the Supreme Court requesting an inquiry into the circumstances of the death of former CBI court judge Brijgopal Harikishan Loya.

Loya who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case was found dead on December 1, 2014.

Several news stories suggesting foul play following which several petitions were filed in the Supreme Court demanding an enquiry.

“The undersigned advocates practising in various courts in Maharashtra, including the Bombay high court are pained and aggrieved to see the way and manner in which political parties have colluded together in challenging the rule of law and authority of courts whereby a deliberate and systematic attempt is being made to malign, not only the image and institution of chief justice of India and the justice delivery system in the eyes of public at large but also under disguise to sabotage the Constitution of India which acts nothing short of sedition,” the memorandum said.

Prashan Maggu, one of the 50 lawyers who has signed the memorandum, confirmed handing it over to the acting chief justice and said, “Suo moto action should be taken and we can’t remain mute spectators.
