Court allows woman to abort foetus

The report stated that foetus has a serious hernia due to which the child could die after birth.

Mumbai: The Bombay high court has allowed a 25-year-old woman of Solapur to abort her 26-week-old foetus, which has multiple abnormalities. According to the petitioner, her pregnancy has gone beyond the ceiling period of 20 weeks, within which is permissible for an abortion to be carried out. While allowing her petition, the court considered the opinion of the medical board set up by it to conduct a test on the woman. The report stated that foetus has a serious hernia due to which the child could die after birth.

A vacation bench of Justice S.J. Kathawala and Justice Ajay Gadkari was hearing a writ petition filed by the woman. She had produced a sonography and MRI report issued by Dr. Pankaj Shroff, paediatric surgeon, Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital Mumbai. The report stated that the foetus suffered from hernia on the left side.

The report also stated that there could be another genetic abnormalities associated with this condition.
