Mumbai to get heavy rainfall in next 48 hrs

The city and the suburbs are likely to witness spells of rain and thundershowers in the coming days.

Mumbai: Many parts of Mumbai witnessed a light drizzle on Saturday and officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have said that the monsoon in the city is likely to gather pace. The city and the suburbs are likely to witness spells of rain and thundershowers in the coming days.

There was a light drizzle in areas like Mulund, Malad, Vikhroli, Dadar, Andheri, Borivali and Fort. The IMD Colaba observatory recorded very meagre rains of 20 mm while the Santa Cruz observatory recorded 22.8 mm of rain from 8.30 am till 8.30 pm on Friday.

An IMD official said, “A few spells of rain or thundershowers is likely in the city and suburbs. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 33 degrees Celsius and 27 degrees Celsius. There is a pressure gradient in the Arabian Sea that may increase around June 23-24, giving the city moderate to heavy rains.”

Total rainfall recorded so far since June 1 by the IMD Colaba observatory is 220.8 mm, 97.6 mm below average, while the Santa Cruz observatory recorded 205.7mm of rainfall, which is 87 mm below average. After the hot and dry weather, the weather in the city is quite pleasant now. The city has been witnessing a good amount of rain in the past 24 hours, but now it is predicted that Mumbai will witness very heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours.
