Mumbai: The Malad police has got till August 28 the custody of Amita Chenanda, who allegedly stabbed to death her husband, former hockey player Apaiyya Chenanda (52). The police had sought Amita’s custody to interrogate her. According to the police, Amita is mentally stable and had deliberately assaulted her husband.

Amita, the second wife of Chenanda, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stabbing him to death on Saturday afternoon in Malad.

According to Malad police officials, after attacking Chenanda, Amita allegedly inflicted injuries on herself.

Sudhir Mahadik, a senior police inspector at Malad police station, said, “We have got her police custody till August 28. She has plotted a story and we have got some evidence which clearly show her role in the death of Chenanda. We need time to interrogate her. We have arrested the accused and have booked her under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that pertains to murder. She will be presented in court.”

The police team from Malad had immediately arrested Amita for allegedly murdering her husband after the doctors of Kandivali’s civic-run Shatabdi hospital declared her fit to be discharged.

During interrogation, Amita’s neighbours said she had approached them for help, claiming her husband had stabbed himself to death after his attempt to kill her failed. However, the police decided to arrest Amita after her story did not match up with the statements narrated by the family and other acquaintances of Chenanda.
