Uddhav's speech disrupted by Modi' chants
Mumbai: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was present for the foundation stone-laying programme of the Chhatrapati Shivaji memorial, but he was heckled by Bharatiya Janata Party (BPJ) workers chanting ‘Modi Modi’ when he rose to speak at Bandra-Kurla Complex. Earlier in the programme, Shiv Sena and BJP workers had a brief clash and the police had to resolve the issue outside the venue. There were reports that some Shiv Sainiks left the premises because their leader had been disrespected.
As Mr Thackeray started speaking, the crowd deliberately started chanting slogans Modi Modi. Choosing not to pay heed to this, Mr Thackeray welcomed the announcements by the state and the Centre for Mumbai and termed them ‘Santa Claus’ gifts’. The Sena had threatened to boycott to programme if its chief wasn’t allotted a seat next to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis or the governor. However, Mt Fadnavis intervened and convinced Mr Thackeray to attend the programme. Mr Thackeray remained close to Mr Modi for jalpooja ceremony in the Arabian Sea.
“I have come here to bow before Shivaji. He is the only king in history who is still relevant. He inspires many,” Mr Thackeray said at the programme. The Sena chief also appealed the PM to give possession of all forts in Maharashtra to the state government. “Modiji please give us possession of our forts from archaeology department. We want to protect them,” he said. Mr Uddhav also reiterated the Centre should land on the eastern coast as an open space for public use.
Shiv Sangram leader Vinayak Mete, another BJP ally, who was upset about the BJP’s alleged high-handedness, however, attended the function with the PM. He is heading committee formed for the Shivaji memorial. Another alliance partner, Swabhiman Shetkari Sanghatana leader Raju Shetti, was conspicuous by his absence.
