Sena hinders BJP's plan to rename square

The proposal was put up for approval during the ward committee meeting of A, B and E wards on Thursday.

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) efforts to name a square at Kala Ghoda after former Israeli President, late Shimon Peres, have been foiled by its own ally, the Shiv Sena, in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The proposal was rejected in the ward committee, with the Sena joining hands with Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress to vote against it.

The proposal was put up for approval during the ward committee meeting of A, B and E wards on Thursday. However, SP group leader Rais Shaikh opposed it saying it is in violation of the BMC resolution not to give foreigners’ names to city areas. His suggestion was upheld by Sena and Congress corporators, due to which the proposal was rejected on the basis of majority. Earlier too, SP and Congress had opposed the same proposal during the BMC group leaders’ meeting. Due to their opposition, the proposal was kept pending and the civic administration decided to table it in the ward committee meeting.
