Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has promised to scrap the ordinance issued by the Centre on the Triple Talaq Bill if voted to power in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“We will scrap the ordinance issued by the Centre for Triple Talaq after coming to power,” said Nawab Malik, NCP spokesperson, while presenting the party’s manifesto for the LS polls. “The ordinance has not been passed in parliament. Hence, after the election if the new government comes to power, it can scrap the ordinance.”

The Supreme Court has given the verdict that Triple Talaq is illegal. Measures should be taken to follow the SC verdict properly. Instead, the BJP is trying to derive political mileage from it, said Mr Malik.

“Triple Talaq Bill, in its current form, was enacted without taking the community into confidence. The NCP will initiate a process to arrive at a consensus on issues related to Triple Talaq by facilitating interaction between different schools of thought in the community including religious heads, reformists and other sections of the community,” he added.

When asked how the party would implement its manifesto, Mr Malik exuded confidence that the party would be a part of the next non-BJP government and influence policy-making.

The NCP also promised a complete loan waiver for small and middle-income farmers and resumption of talks with Pakistan in its manifesto.
