Mumbai: After completing networking of police stations, the Maharashtra government has decided to set up crime criminal tracking network system (CCTNS) in courts in the state. The home department held a meeting with officials from the judiciary to discuss connecting of courts with police stations. The judiciary has agreed to the networking of courts in the state.

The CCTNS aims at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing through adopting of the principle of e-governance and creation of a nationwide networking infrastructure.

This also will help in the investigation of crime and detection of criminals. The Centre has made an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore for CCTNS project. Maharashtra has bagged the third position in the country in connecting police stations through the CCTNS. Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand have topped the list for implementation of CCTNS. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reviewed the implementation of CCTNS in every state in May.

“After completing networking of police stations, we have decided to bring judiciary within the purview of the network. This will work complementary to each other. Police can track a case at judicial level while judiciary can also take help of records at the police stations. We held a meeting with officials from the judiciary, and they have agreed to the proposal,” an official from the home department said. The move will help in setting up e-courts, he added.

The primary preparation has started for bringing the judiciary under CCTNS by the home department. However, the official refused to divulge details of the expenditure for the project. “It is not a very expensive project. The Centre is also sponsoring us, so funds are not a problem,” he said. The project that started in 2009 would connect police stations and judiciary in all the states with each other.

Plan’s Aims

  • Make the police functioning citizen-friendly and more transparent.
  • Improve delivery of citizen-centric services through effective usage of ICT.
  • Provide the investigating officers of the civil police with tools, technology and information.
