Colleges to surrender in-house' quota, 3rd FYJC list postponed

In minority colleges, a share of 20 per cent is reserved for the former students of institutions.

MUMBAI: Students who are waiting for the third general merit list of the first year junior college (FYJC), which was supposed to be out on Thursday, now have to wait a little longer.

The state education department on Wednesday evening postponed the list after the Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court allowed the minority colleges to surrender their ‘in-house’ vacant seats to the general category.

Talking to this newspaper, deputy director of education, Mumbai region Rajendra Ahire said, “As of now, no decision has been taken regarding the vacant minority seats.

However, the vacant seats under the in-house quota in the colleges will be asked to transfer to us (department), and in this way the number of seats in the general category for the open category students in the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) will increase and it will be better for the students who are looking for admissions.”

Approximately, 12,000 seats under the in-house quota are lying vacant in the city and suburban minority colleges. In minority colleges, a share of 20 per cent is reserved for the former students of institutions.

Over 60,000 seats are lying vacant under minority quota while 7,000 seats in management quota. As of now, a decision has been made only for the in-house quota.

A fresh set of dates for the third general merit list and fourth merit list will be declared on Thursday on the official website of FYJC admissions. By the end of second general list, only a handful seats are remaining in top colleges in the city. For example, St. Xavier’s College at Fort has no seats remaining in the Arts stream.
