209 ALMs to be trashed for not sorting garbage
Mumbai: Taking stern action against incompetent Advance Locality Management (ALM) groups, the Brihanmum-bai Municipal Corpora-tion (BMC) has decided to cancel registration of 209 ALMs for their failure to carry out waste segregation and disposal at the source.
“Of these 209 groups, 191 ALMs have found to be inactive in waste management field. Though 18 are active, their work is found not satisfactory. Hence we have decided to cancel their registration and appoint new ALMs in their place,” said Vijay Balamwar, deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management).
According to civic officials, more than 7,000 buildings in the city are affiliated with 719 ALMs, which are registered with the BMC.
During the survey, it was found that only 456 ALMs were active in their areas. Of them, 265 were found to be active in waste management field. Of these, works of 145 ALMs were found satisfactory, whereas 120 were found substandard, said civic officials.
Of the 120 ALMs, registration of 18 ALMs have already been cancelled. Review of remaining 102 ALMs is being taken and if their work is not good, their registration too will be cancelled, said civic officials. Of the 145 ALMs, which were found satisfactory, maximum 38 were found in H-West ward. It is followed by K-West (19), H-West (12), R-South (11) and F-South (10) wards.
The ALMs are the citizen groups, which work in their concerned areas to create awareness about civic issues.
The ALM concept was promoted by the BMC in November 1997 to associate citizens for cleanliness related issues. One of the prerequisite for formation of the ALM was segregation of garbage at source.
In view of SWM rules 2016, Environment Impact Assessment Notification and IOD conditions post year 2007, prerequisite qualification for ALM shall also include processing and composting of wet waste at source.
