Mumbai Congress to see change in leadership?

As the Congress high command is set to reshuffle the units in a few states, the Mumbai unit could be one of them.

Mumbai: The buzz about a change in guard in the Mumbai Congress has picked up again. There is strong opposition to Sanjay Nirupam within the party from three major groups: Milind Deora, Eknath Gaikwad, and late Gurudas Kamat. Very few leaders are with Mr Nirupam. As the Congress high command is set to reshuffle the units in a few states, the Mumbai unit could be one of them.

After winning three Hindi heartland states, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is reportedly working on the plan to change the leadership of a few state committees.

There is strong demand for the removal of Mr Nirupam from the post of Mumbai Congress chief for quite some time. It is now being said that Mr Gandhi will take a decision on the issue.

There are various gro-ups in the Mumbai Con-gress. Mr Deora and Mr Gaikwad are against Mr Nirupam. Late Mr Kamat’s group is also against Mr Nirupam. As of now, Mr Nirupam has the support of only two prominent leaders – MLA Aslam Sheikh and former MLC Charan Singh Sapra.

Earlier, Mr Deora met Mr Gandhi and briefed the latter about the discontent over Mr Nirupam’s leadership. These anti-Nirupam groups had also complained to state Congress in-charge Mallikarjun Kharge. However, the decision was not taken at the time.
