Will call meeting, resolve students' issues, says Devendra Fadnavis

The police took 150 protesters into custody for a few hours but they remained firm on Tuesday.

Mumbai: Differentlyabled people who were on strike since Monday called off their agitation on Tuesday after the state government accepted a few of their demands and the chief minister conveyed his message that he would call a meeting to resolve the remaining issues.

On Tuesday, Dilip Kambale, minister for social justice for state, in the presence of the deaf and mute people who were on strike, declared that a few of their demands like new schools for them to be started at Nashik and Latur would be met. Interpreters would be appointed for them at general schools.

The police also took over 150 people into custody for a few hours. The protesters remained firm and continued their strike even Tuesday, sleeping in front of the commissionerate at night.

Mr Kambale had rushed to Pune midnight and tried to meet the injured protesters. Since the morning, he was at the commissionerate speaking to the protesters and conveying their messages to the government and vice versa.

By 3 pm, he declared, “Two more schools of higher medium will be started in Nashik and Latur and private institutions will be given the task to start the schools. There are five such schools already in the state. Expert committees that will take decisions about the schools will have two members from the deaf and mute association.”
