Mumbai: The D.N Nagar police team found the bodies of three occupants of a transit camp residence in Andheri west on Wednesday morning. While a 33-year-old male, Sameer Khan who ran a local vada pav-cum-tea stall was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his residence, room number 35, his stepmother and grandmother were found dead on a bed.

The police is waiting for findings of the autopsy report of the three bodies to determine the exact cause of the deaths. The police, though, suspects that Khan killed his stepmother Minatai Khan (55) and grandmother Fatima Shaikh (85) and then hanged himself with a nylon string.

Khan, who owned a roadside teashop in the area, had moved to the transit camp at Indira Nagar three months ago.

The police source added that prima facie it looks like murder, because the dead bodies of the women bore no injury marks, but there was blood oozing out of the grandmother’s mouth.

Speaking to The Asian Age, Arun Chavan, assistant commissioner of police attached to D.N. Nagar division said, “The three bodies were found from Room number 35 of the transit camp in Andheri west. Two relatives of Sameer Khan had arrived at the spot, and we will question them to get to the root of the problem, which triggered Sameer to take such a drastic step of hanging himself instead of approaching for help.”

According to the police sources attached to D.N. Nagar police station, the incident took place at 9.30 am on Wednesday morning. A three-year-old neighbour opened the door of Sameer’s house to give tobacco to his grandmother Fatima. When she opened the door, the minor saw Sameer hanging from a ceiling fan, and the bodies of his stepmother and grandmother were lying on opposite beds, and their faces were covered with a bed sheet. The girl then went crying to her parents, who immediately alerted the police officials.

Sameer, who used to work with his stepmother Minatai, at a teashop, selling tea and vada pav at the road’s corner, did not interact much with the people in the society. Few people knew his grandmother, Fatima, since she used to stay alone at home the whole day.

The police is probing the case from various angles to ascertain whether it was a murder or suicide.
