MUMBAI: Leader of the Opposition, Mr Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil on Thursday lambasted the state government for printing a faulty map of India in the new Class 10 textbooks. He said that a large part of Jammu and Kashmir has been shown outside India in the map and the colour of India’s national emblem, the Ashok Chakra, has a different shade.

The Congress leader dashed off a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that the culprits for the mistakes should be booked. “It is very outrageous that the Maharashtra Bureau of Textbooks has given a wrong map of India in the latest geography text book for standard 10.

“A large part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been shown outside India, which is wrong.

In another chapter, the Ashok Chakra of the Indian flag has been shown in a different colour,” Mr Vikhe-Patil said.

The wrong Indian map is found on page 24 of the third chapter while the wrong Ashok Chakra is on page nine of the second chapter.

The book was kept for review by experts, who had pointed out the mistakes. “The former principal from Satana, Prof. K.U. Sonawane objected to the mistakes in writing. But the texbook bureau did not take cognisance of the matter. He had pointed out other mistakes as well,” Mr Vikhe Patil said.

Demanding that the culprits be arrested, Mr Vikhe-Patil said that it is serious thing to insult the Indian flag. “The book has to be corrected before teaching it to the students. But the culprits should be arrested for the grave mistake, like insulting the flag,” he added.
