Five corporators to get BMC award each year
Mumbai: Soon, five city corporators who are deemed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to have excelled in their roles may win awards for their public service. The BMC has given green signal to the proposal of evaluating the performance of corporators and felicitate them with awards every year.
The civic administration, however, has put up some riders to assess the performance of corporators. “Those who are interested in the award should submit their applications with all details to the mayor along with recommendations of five corporators,” said the civic administration’s reply to the civic law committee.
In addition to this, the tenure of interested corporators should be without blemish. They should not be fined or convicted under any criminal case. They should also seek ‘no-objection certificate’ or warranty letter from the local police station. But that will not include complaints filed against them about their participation in rallies, disputes, conflicts, etc while solving people’s problems with government and semi-government organisations, officials said.
The proposal was put up by former Shiv Sena corporator Manm-ohan Chonkar, who had demanded that the civic body should felicitate the five best corporators every year. “The BMC felicitates prominent personalities for excellence in their particular field or their contribution to the society. The corporators, who get elected in the BMC, also work for people day in and day out. They raise several issues in the civic house for the people’s welfare. In this backdrop, BMC should felicitate at least five corporators every year by evaluating their performance,” Mr Chonkar said.
The civic body should access the performance of corporators with the help of proper guidelines and felicitate them with municipal memento and certificate, he added.
The civic administration had earlier opposed the proposal citing the lack of manpower to study and evaluate the performance of 227 corporators. However, it has now agreed to do it.
