Now WhatsApp your noise plaint to police

People can also call and email their grievances.

Mumbai: With the festival time around, Mumbai Police has appealed citizens to keep away from noise pollution and raise their voice against it. The police has announced telephone, WhatsApp numbers as well as email IDs to enable people to file their grievances in this regard.

According to high court directives, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared 110 silent zones across the city. In these silent zones, bursting of firecrackers, playing loud speakers has been prohibited during the time period of 10 pm to 10 am. Accordingly, city areas have been classified into various silent zones with certain noise levels.

According to Noise Pollution Regulation and Control Rules 2000, if anyone violates the law then the person will be liable for five years of imprisonment or a fine of Rs 1 lakh or both. If violation continues even after punishment, the person would be fined Rs 5000 daily. If the offence takes places again within a year of punishment, there is a provision of imprisonment of seven years in the act.

“If people have any complaints regarding noise pollution, they can register their complaints on telephone and WhatsApp numbers. Their names would be kept confidential,” said Manjunath Shinge, deputy commissioner of police (operations).
