Mumbai: Mumbai is expected to receive moderate rains from Friday, according to the weather department. The city has been receiving intermittent showers since Wednesday, with light showers in few parts here.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a heavy rainfall warning, but moderate rains were witnessed in the evening.

IMD officials stated that the intensity of rains may increase during the weekend, but it will not rain very heavily. “Rainfall realised in the last 12 hrs at 7.30 pm in Mumbai and around indicates light rain towards the suburbs and moderate rainfall with few intense spells towa-rds the city side and Navi Mumbai, Thane areas,” K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director-general, IMD tweeted.

According to Skymet Weather, a private weather agency, the Monsoon surge has once again activated over Konkan and Goa including Mumbai city as a Cyclonic Circulation has developed over South Gujarat. The data available with Skymet Weather revealed that the Konkan region from June 1 to September 25 has received a mammoth 4,298.3 mm of rain against the seasonal average of 2,915 mm, which is 53 per cent excess.

“There still are a few more days left before the month of September comes to an end. So with chances of rain during the remaining days, the rainfall figure may go higher,” read the Skymet Weather report.

Meanwhile, heavy rains continued to lash Nashik city and parts of the district for the third consecutive day on Thursday, throwing normal life out of gear.

As the downpour led to waterlogging, it disrupted the flow of traffic on the Mumbai-Agra national highway.

The showers also led to the disruption of services on the Central Railway (CR) tracks on Wednesday.

As the catchments areas received good rains, water from different dams in the district, like the Gangapur dam near Nashik, was released into the Godavari river.
