Suicide family was in debt: locals

The police too suspects that the Khan family was going through financial problems which might have triggered the death of the three members.

Mumbai: A day after three members of a family — Sameer, his mother Meena Khan, and grandmother Fatima Shaikh — were found dead at a transit camp in Andheri west, neighbours have said that the family was debt-ridden as Meena had approached some of them, enquiring about procedures and formalities to procure a personal loan from the bank. The police too suspects that the Khan family was going through financial problems which might have triggered the death of the three members.

One of the neighbours, requesting anonymity, told The Asian Age, “Sameer had asked me for a solution to repay his debts and approached me for help. Since I had no solution to provide, I suggested he take a personal loan from the bank at lower interest rates.”

According to police sources attached to D.N. Nagar division, the neighbours, during initial interrogation, said that the family seemed to be going through financial problems as Sameer and Meena had approached different people on different occasions, confiding about the family’s poor financial condition and debts that had to be repaid.

Arun Chavan, assistant commissioner of police attached to D.N. Nagar division, said, “We are still awaiting results of the post-mortem but prima facie, the cause of death of the three looks like asphyxia. Right now, it is too soon to ascertain the exact cause of death without results of the post-mortem report to support claims.”
