Mumbai: The unexpected drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls has forced the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to introspect as top leaders of both the parties will meet for a brainstorming session on May 28.

In the recently held Lok Sabha polls, the Congress-NCP combine was expected to do well, especially from the rural areas. However, the Congress was reduced to just one seat in the entire state. It was the party’s worst ever performance in the state as in 2014 Lok Sabha it had won two seats. The NCP only managed to retain its tally of four seats it had won five years back.

The results came as a huge setback to the Opposition combined as a majority of its top leaders including Ashok Chavan, Sushilkumar Shinde, Manikrao Thakre, Milind Deora (Congress), Parth Pawar, Sameer Bhujbal (NCP) lost by a sizeable margin. The debacle has forced leaders of both parties to come together and discuss the reasons behind the defeat. The meeting will be held at opposition leader Dhananjay Munde’s residence on Tuesday. Several top leaders like Ashok Chavan, Jayant Patil are likely to attend the meeting.

According to sources, issues like the impact of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and MNS chief Raj Thackeray will be discussed. Despite Mr Thackeray’s rallies favouring the Opposition, it hardly had any impact on the poll outcome.  State Congress chief Ashok Chavan has blamed the VBA for his party’s debacle in the Lok Sabha polls.
