Mumbai: The Koparkhairane police have registered a case of murder and rioting against unknown persons following the death of a 19-year-old boy, Rohan Dilip Todkar, who had sustained injuries on Wednesday during the violence perpetrated in course of enforcing a ‘bandh’ to seek Maratha reservations.

It is the only bandh-related death reported in Mumbai and adjoining areas. The boy was initially being treated in a local hospital and was shifted to JJ Hospital after his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to assault wounds. Relatives took his body to Satara, which is his native place. Todkar was a resident of sector 15 in Koparkhairne and was a native of Chapalkhonoli in Satara. Following the riots, he was found grievously injured and was admitted to Navi Mumbai Corporation Hospital (NMCH).

“He had received injuries out of assault on him at Koparkhairane village. The doctors shifted him to JJ Hospital on night of July 25. While his treatment was underway, he expired in JJ Hospital. The dead body has been sent to his native village for performing last rites,” said Hemant Nagrale, Navi Mumbai police commissioner.

The Koparkhairane police have registered a case under sections of murder, rioting and acts of common intention and are trying to identify the culprits who fatally assaulted the victim.

The Koparkhairane-Kalamboli belt was worst hit during the rioting after Mathadi workers allegedly went on a rampage targeting all the vehicles in the neighbourhood and setting many of them on fire. The police have registered cases of rooting and are in the process of identifying those involved.
