Kurla GRP arrests 2 CR cashiers for heist
Mumbai: The Kurla Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested three persons, including two Central Railway (CR) cashiers, in connection with a Rs 44 lakh heist at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
The probe led the police to recover a chunk of the stolen booty that was stashed by the trio at the residence of the fourth accomplice in Koparkhairane.
The police have arrested Sameer Tarabaadkar (33) and Vinod Pillai (34), who had executed the heist with the help of another railway employee Moreshwar Kadam (37). They had taken the booty at the residence of Ajit Deshmukh at Koparkhairane, from where the police recovered Rs 29.80 lakh.
“We are yet to ascertain the exact motive behind the act and are questioning the arrested accused. The remaining money was splurged by the accused, details of which are being gathered,” said an officer of Kurla GRP.
Tarabaadkar and Pillai were already under the scanner after the chief booking supervisor Sunil Teltumbde named them as the suspects in the theft. The duo was on duty and had flouted the protocol while changing the charge. Pillai had also not given the keys of the safe to Tarabaadkar, which was confirmed during the investigation.
The GRP scanned the CCTV camera footage at LTT and did not find any suspicious person entering the restricted area. The accused failed to give convincing answers to the investigators, leading to their arrests. The CR has also suspended the employees and begun an internal enquiry against them.
The accused have been booked under sections 454 (trespassing) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and have been remanded to police custody.
