MBMC slaps notices on 74 candidates
Mumbai: Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) chief Dr Naresh Gite has sent show-cause notices to 74 candidates, seeking their explanation for not filing mandated affidavits and proper details of the expenses incurred during the recently held civic elections.
Noting that after elections every candidate was required to file an account of expenses within 30 days, MBMC officials said that as per Election Commission’s (EC) directions, if candidates did not comply, show-cause notices are to be served and action must be taken under the relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act.
Section 10A of the act states that if the EC is satisfied that a person has failed to submit an account of expenses within the timeframe and has no good reason or justification, it can disqualify that person for three years from the date of the order. But, in this case, all recipients of the notice are defeated candidates.
The candidates who are under the scanner include independents, followed by other parties including the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party, Congress and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Elections to the 95 members MBMC was held on August 20.
