Teachers can't tutor kids in private
Mumbai: The state government on Thursday issued a circular to all aided (state/ BMC-run) schools, directing their teachers to sign a bond giving an undertaking to the schools’ principals that they will not conducting private tuitions. The state issued the circular in a bid to prevent malpractices, including question paper leaks, dissemination of confidential information and revealing of probable questions that have surfaced over the last few years.
Earlier in 2012, the Supreme Court had said that all the schools, except the unaided minority institutions, will be prohibited from giving private tutorials. The same pattern was followed by the state government however, this government resolution (GR) is only restricted to aided-schools or the state board schools.
The GR says that an aided-school teacher will have to submit an undertaking to the Principal of the schools, which will say that they won’t give any kind of ‘private coaching’ to the students. However, the GR does not mention whether the students should be of the same school as the teacher, or any other independent coaching classes.
According to our sources, it is very common in schools to have probable question paper pattern where a teacher gives important questions or selected questions to the students in the coaching classes. Parents say it is a kind of injustice to regular students who don’t go to such coaching classes but are only dependent on school education.
Majority of the teachers feel this is one good decision, as this kind of restriction is needed. “There are several teachers who form a group of students who they give private coaching classes. These students score better marks to compared to other students as they are told certain things which the normal school students aren’t aware of,” said Rajesh Pandya, a teacher. Pandya feels it’s a good thing for the teachers who are loyal towards their work.
