Australian woman helps nab molester'

Finds out the taxi driver's whereabouts and goes to the police two days later.

Mumbai: A 20-year-old Australian woman who was allegedly molested by a kaali-peeli taxi driver chased him, got his address and filed an FIR in Colaba police station on Friday. The 30-year-old accused was given judicial custody of 14-days.

According to police officials, the accused identified as Zia Ikram Ansari, is a resident of Worli. “The woman said in her complaint that she was heading to CST from Colaba on January 22, when she caught a taxi and sat next to the driver. The driver, while taking his seat belt from her side, took advantage of the situation and molested her and tried to kiss her. After she got down from the cab she noted down his taxi number, called her friend to gather information about filing FIR and IPC sections. Over the next two days, she found out the whereabouts of the taxi driver and his residence and approached the police with all details,” police officials said.

According to the investigating officer, the woman in her complaint also mentioned that sitting that in her home country, she often sits next to the driver seat. The woman, who had come here for some work at YMCA, was staying with her friend in Colaba. “She discussed the situation with her friend on the same day when they decided to learn more about filing compliant in the police station. Meanwhile the victim tried to keep an eye on the driver where he stands and where he stays. Later on, she came to us,” said the officer.

Senior PI of Colaba police station, Vijay Dhopavkar said, “The victim and her friend approached us, and we took the details. We approached the owner of the taxi and got the accused’s details. We traced his number and arrested him from the CST area. We have arrested him under IPC sections of molestation and produced him in the court. He was granted two days police custody.”

In August 2015, an American woman, who alleged a man masturbated at her in South Mumbai’s Colaba area in the morning, had sought help on Twitter to nab the alleged culprit by posting his image. The case is still going on in the court. The Asian Age tried contacting the Australian woman, but she didn’t answer her phone.
