Mumbai: A fortnight after the ill-fated crash-landing of a Coast Guards' helicopter in Murud, the only grievously injured woman officer succumbed to her injuries late on Tuesday. The lady assistant commandant Penny Chowdhary (27) was undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at INHS Asvini following the March 10 crash landing.
The surveillance sortie was underway off the coast south of Mumbai and the chopper crash-landed six nautical miles north of Murud near Alibaug.
Ms Chowdhary was found unconscious after the accident with severe head and back injuries.
The ill-fated Chetak 'C-803' helicopter of Indian Coast Guards (CG) crash-landed in Alibaug's Murud, within 25 minutes of its take off for a surveillance sortie. A high-level board of enquiry is underway currently and a report will be submitted based on its findings to the CG commander (west region).
“Ms Chowdhary’s last rights will be carried out at her native in Karnal. The body has been handed over to the family,” said Avinandan Mitra, assistant commandant and CG spokesperson.
