Mumbai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Maharashtra as several parts of the state recorded temperature above 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

According to the IMD, areas like Vidarbha, Marathwada and Central Maharashtra have been recording temperatures up to 45°C since past few days. Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man succumbed to heatstroke in Akola district, a police officer said on Sunday.

According to the IMD warning, heatwaves are likely to prevail in Marathwada and Central Maharashtra till Monday.

“Heatwave will be felt in some isolated pockets. Whereas the south Madhya Maharashtra is likely to face thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with the speed reaching 30-40 km per hour at isolated places in the districts of Satara, Sangli, Solapur and Kolhapur,” the IMD said.

The IMD report further stated that Nashik, Pune, Ahmednagar and Jalgaon districts would witness a heatwave along with warm night conditions. Akola and Chandrapur recorded the highest temperature in the state at 47 degree Celsius on Saturday, followed by Amravati and Wardha which sizzled at 46-degree Celsius each. Yavatmal, Parbhani, Nanded, Jalgaon and Ahmednagar districts each recorded 45 degree Celsius temperature.

Mumbai recorded 35.8-degree Celsius maximum temperature since Saturday. The IMD also stated that Marathwada region is likely to receive thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, which could be attributed to the trough from the above cyclonic circulation to south Konkan that now runs across Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra.

Akola had witnessed the death of Sheshrao Jaware, a resident of Lahanumbri village, who was found unconscious outside the gate of a women’s hospital on Friday evening.

As he was rushed to the civil hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead. The postmortem report revealed that Jaware died after suffering heatstroke, police stated.
