On polling eve, liquor worth Rs 1 Lakh seized

The police received specific information that the stock was stored at Alma Bungalow in Gracia Nagar area in Nalasopara.

Mumbai: A day prior to Lok Sabha elections, the Palghar police seized liquor worth Rs 1.12 lakh on Saturday from a bungalow in Nalasopara.

The seized bottles included those of Johnnie Walker and McDowell’s, police said adding that were kept for commercial purpose and not personal consumption.

The police received specific information that the stock was stored at Alma Bungalow in Gracia Nagar area in Nalasopara.

The police conducted a raid at around 2.30am at the property and apprehended a person identified as Elis D’Silva (58).

“When the bungalow was checked thoroughly, we found the bottles stashed at the top floor inside cartons. Relevant documents of the liquor were not available and the person could not give answers about the huge stock of alcohol bottles,” said an officer of the crime branch unit of Palghar police.

The police took custody of D’silva and have filed a case against him and another person as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act and further investigation is underway to ascertain the purpose of the liquor stock. The police will also record statement of the owner and other persons for further investigation in the case.
