Council adjourned over Dhangar quota

Munde said that it was unprecedented†that the government was not letting the House function.

Mumbai: The Legislative Council was adjourned twice Friday following the uproar over demand for Dhangar reservation. After a brief adjournment initially, the house was later adjourned for the day as the pandemonium continued.

The uproar began after legislators from the ruling alliance objected to “unparliamentary” words used by Congress leader Bhai Jagtap while speaking on the issue Thursday. Mr Jagtap said, “Reservation is neither one’s bailment nor anyone’s property.”

However, the Opposition MLCs denied that Mr Jagtap had used un-parliamentary language. Following chaos, the deputy chairperson adjourned the house for half an hour.

When proceedings resumed in the house, Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde said that the government was ensuring that the Dhangar reservation issue was not properly discussed in the House.

Mr Munde said that it was “unprecedented” that the government was not letting the House function.

“We wanted to raise the issue. But the ruling alliance deliberately created a ruckus,” Mr Munde alleged.
