Water level in reservoirs remain a concern
The state government has allowed the BMC to use the reserved stock of 1.71 million litres of water.
Mumbai: Although the city received heavy rainfall Friday, the water content in the reservoirs is far less than the required level. The water stock in Brihanmumbai Muni-cipal Corporation (BMC) owned dams is only around 5 per cent of the total capacity.
As on Friday morning, the seven reservoirs had a water stock of 71,017 million litres. The BMC is currently supplying water to Mumbai from the reserved stock of Bhatsa dam.
The state government has allowed the BMC to use the reserved stock of 1.71 million litres of water.
As per the information provided by the BMC, the rainfall recorded Friday in the reservoirs was Tansa 60 mm, Vihar 209 mm, Tulsi 143 mm, Middle Vaitarna 78 mm and Modak Sagar 69 mm.
The BMC supplies a total 3,500 litres of water to Mumbai every day. The seven reservoirs from where Mumbai gets water are: Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar and Tulsi. These catchments have been receiving rainfall for the last few days, however it is very less than the corresponding period last monsoon.
On Friday, June 28, the water stock in the reservoirs was only 71,017 million litres which on the corresponding day last year was 2,97,130 million litres.
As on Thursday, live water content in the BMC managed dams were Modak Sagar — 32598 million litres, Tansa — 2356 million litres, Middle Vaitarna — 33480 million litres, Vehar — 1198 million litres and Tulsi —1942 million litres.
