V-C admits varsity will miss July 31 deadline: Sources

Deshmukh along with senior officers from the university appeared before council chairman on Friday.

Mumbai: Mumbai University’s (MU) vice chancellor Dr Sanjay Deshmukh told the legislative Council chairman that it is not possible for the examination department to complete the assessment of final year papers before July 31 — the deadline set by Maharashtra governor C. Vidyasagar Rao. Mr Deshmukh met Council chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar on Friday.

Education minister Vinod Tawde, opposition leader Dhananjay Munde, MLC Niranjan Davkhare and other senior officials of MU were also present at the meeting. The source, who attended the meeting, confirmed that Mr Deshmukh and his colleagues accepted that they wouldn’t be able to declare results on July 31.

Council chairman Mr Nimbalkar had called Mr Deshmukh to quell the concerns of the MLCs about the ongoing MU results controversy. Mr Deshmukh along with senior officers from the university appeared before council chairman on Friday. He also added that MU staff and moderators are working every day and are under huge pressure.

Mr Nimbalkar expressed concern after Mr Deskmukh put forth his defence. “You should have gauged the situation and work accordingly,” Mr Nimbalkar told Mr Desmukh. Mr Tawde, who also attended the meeting said, “Results must be accurate. Take two more days but complete work by avoiding mistakes”.

Opposition leader Dhananjay Munde slammed MU administration. “This shows your failure to handle the situation. Who will be responsible if students don’t get admission for their further studies, despite getting good marks?” asked Mr Munde.

Mr Nimbalkar asked the MU administration to expedite the paper assessment work.
