Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set up a one-member committee to inquire into the death of a thirty-two-year-old man who got sucked into an MRI machine at Nair Hospital on Saturday.

After getting sucked into the MRI machine, Rajesh Maru inhaled the liquid oxygen, due to which he died on the spot. The incident has put the spotlight on the lack of safety measures in BMC-run hospitals.

According to civic officials, additional municipal commissioner Ides Kundan has set up a committee headed by Sunil Dhamne, deputy municipal commissioner (public health) to probe the incident. He has been asked to submit the inquiry report within 15 days.

“I have been asked to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The report is likely to be submitted within two weeks,” said Mr Dhamne.

According to him, the CCTV footage will play a major role in describing how the incident took place. “Investigation would also be made into who was on duty at the time of the incident, what precautions should have been taken and allegations being made about the cylinder being with the deceased,” he added.

Bhartiya Janata Party  MLA Mangal Prabhat Lodha said, “I have demanded that the inquiry should be conducted by higher-level authorities. Besides the case should be fast-tracked.”
