BMC shuts unfit Dahisar skywalk as precaution
The skywalk has been in news in 2012 after it developed cracks just a year after construction.
Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has shut the 850-metre Dahisar skywalk partially and has asked pedestrians not to use it, as it is not fit for use.
The Dahisar skywalk, which was constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore almost eight years ago, was recently in the news after a portion of it came crashing down, injuring two senior citizens.
A civic officer from the R/North ward said, “We have shut the west side of the skywalk, and the skywalk on the eastern side is functional. The police, after the incident two months ago, had directed us to shut the skywalk but was opened for public later.”
He further added, “However, after the slab collapsed we appointed a consultant who is currently studying whether the bridge should be repaired or demolished and be constructed again. It was the consultant who suggested that we keep the skywalk shut on the west side as a precautionary measure.”
The skywalk was also in the news in 2012 when it started developing cracks just one year after the construction was completed. About eight years ago, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had completed the construction of 39 skywalks.
