80 admission applications under RTE Act rejected

According to him, around 1,183 applications out of 3,239 still awaits verification.

Mumbai: In the ongoing admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which looks after admissions in the city, rejected around 80 applications of students on grounds they had alleged submitted fake address particulars in the admission process. The civic body said it also rejected a few other applications because several parents tried to apply in more than three schools, which is the norm, using a single application form.

As per the officials of the education department of the civic body, in the latest RTE admission procedure, once a parent submits the application, the officials physically verify the residence of the applicant. “We have received several cases where the parents try to submit fake address copy in order to get admissions in their preferred schools,” said a senior official of the department.

According to him, around 1,183 applications out of 3,239 still awaits verification.

Mentioning about choosing multiple schools, the official explained that according to the guidelines of RTE, a candidate could apply only in three schools, which falls under the radius from 1 km (in the first round of admission) to 3 km (in the third round).

Deadline approaches

The last date of admission is May 4 and as of now the BMC have shortlisted 3,239 applications and admitted 1,827 children. While 1,183 await verification, 229 applicants are yet to approach the civic body
